Five Things to Be Thankful for This Thanksgiving

You may have a lot to be thankful for at this time of year. Even if you have experienced a significant loss or other misfortune this year, you can comfort yourself in giving thanks for the things you do have and those you can look forward to in the coming year.

Our team of personal injury lawyers at Steve Ray Law of Fort Collins, would like to wish you a happy, safe Thanksgiving holiday and share with you our following list of the five things we hope we can all be thankful for this holiday:

1. Having a safe Thanksgiving with family and friends.

A safe Thanksgiving has many elements. The first element is the host’s home. It should be properly lit, cleaned and cleared of any potential hazards such as frayed wires or broken steps. Any dangerous conditions should be repaired or removed before the guests arrive.

Another part of a safe holiday is making sure all guests arrive and depart safely. If there will be drinking at your Thanksgiving celebration, designate an individual to drive guests to their homes or offer your guests the opportunity to stay the night.

2. A beautifully cooked holiday meal without burns, accidents or personal injury.

Kitchen safety is also an important part of Thanksgiving. To prevent burns and cuts, you should delegate kitchen tasks so the area does not become overcrowded. Keep children and pets out of the kitchen to prevent harm to them as well as to the individuals preparing the meal.

Preventing food poisoning is an important aspect of food safety. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services urges people to avoid cross-contamination by using separate utensils and cutting boards for each dish. After the meal is complete, package any leftovers promptly and store them in the refrigerator.

Also, remember to pay close attention to your turkey’s internal temperature before you serve it. To prevent food-borne illness from the turkey, cook it to 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. Enjoying a smooth, easy, stress-free Thanksgiving trip.

As we move deeper into the fall season, the days grow shorter, and the weather grows colder. When combined with the increased number of drivers on the road during the holiday season, these factors can put you and your passengers at greater risk of being injured in a car accident than you face during other times of the year.

Before you depart on your Thanksgiving road trip, check your vehicle’s fluid levels and tire pressure. Pack a safety kit that includes a basic tool set, a warm blanket, a flashlight and first aid materials in case you are stranded or somebody gets hurt. To reduce your chance of being involved in an accident, follow the rules of the road and adjust how you drive to your environment.

4. Thanksgiving Day parades and fun.

Between local and televised parades, football games and family traditions, Thanksgiving can be fun for every member of the family. Cherish these moments because – although they may be traditions – the individual memories of each year can never be replicated.
